When I ask someone about their brand, they often aren’t sure where to start.

So I’ll make it simple for you…for the purposes of remodeling your business, your Brand is really made up of two things:

Who do you want to work with?

What do you want to be known for?

If you are clear on those two answers, everything else becomes easier.

To build a loyal following you need to know who you want to do business with.

Most fitness businesses target EVERYONE.

That won’t work going forward. Not a chance.

You DON'T want to be all things to all people.

You DON'T want to target and market to everyone.

That's not how to build a business that has great culture, enjoys strong retention and generates a flood of referrals.

And, honestly, it’s not how to build a business you’ll enjoy owning.

But if you get clear about who you want to work with and what you want to be known for - it will completely transform your marketing and your business as a whole.

It will ensure that the people you attract - are the people you WANT TO do business with.

And as important as it is to know exactly who you want to attract - you also want a clear idea of who you DON'T WANT as a client.

Your branding gameplan needs to start by defining exactly who your ideal target client is (and conversely, who they aren't).

What are their traits, their wants, their needs, their issues, their pain-points, their irrational fears, their aspirations, their concerns, etc…

Your approach to creating your marketing message and your conversion process should be client-centric.

With me so far?

OK - then the other component of building your brand is identifying what you want to be known for.

It’s basically a statement of who you help and what you do.

And when have the answer to these two questions:

Who do you want to work with?

What do you want to be known for?

It will be much easier to create ads, emails and videos and say things that your prospective clients actually care about.

You'll be able to "connect" with those prospects on a far deeper, more emotional level.

But this has even more value. See, it gives you a position you can OWN in the market.

Positioning is the ‘perception' that happens in the minds of your target prospects.

The story they tell themselves.

It allows you to differentiate your business from that of your competitors.

And if you do a good enough job with "positioning" you render the competition irrelevant.

You’re talking just to the people you want to reach and your message is so laser focused because everyone else is ignored.

The people that aren’t your ‘who’ are ignored so the message you share speaks to your prospect in a way no one else does.

You become a specialist for the ‘right’ people.

And people gravitate to specialists over generalists…oh, and they’ll pay more for a specialist too.

Your brand will give you a position that will…
  • Create a laser-focus on your ideal target prospect.
  • Filter out who you DON'T want.
  • Differentiate you and your business from everyone else.
In today's me-too marketplace - this is how you win. It’s why people will choose you above everyone else.
Step Three: Connect With Interested Prospects.
The days of running ads directly to programs on Facebook are winding down.

You need to be prepared to connect with someone and get their attention first, permission to follow up second and continued attention third.

How do you do that?

Quit trying to ask them to marry you when you meet them.

See, online or offline…people are people and relationships are a step-by-step process.

The first step is giving them something valuable to get their attention and ongoing interest.

It might be your book or guide.

It could be a gift card for your services.

Maybe it’s a checklist or cheatsheet that they find interesting or solves a problem they have.

Ideally, they give you their contact information in exchange for this item…

...but even if it’s just them clicking to go watch your video or download your gift, you can retarget them so you can follow up.

And this works offline just as well as online.

It’s just getting people to indicate that they’re interested in how you can potentially help them.

Raising their hand, saying that they have a problem they want to solve or a goal they want to achieve.

Sure, a few of them might be ready right now...but usually that’s only about 5-7% of the prospects you connect with.

So, you need…
Step Four: A Complete Conversion System.
If you want to win moving forward, this is an area you’re going to need to excel.

Once you have someone’s attention initially, you’ve got to follow up.

You have to educate them.
You need to motivate them.
You need to help them see how you’re different and how you’re better.

Most people try to qualify on the front end with demographics, but the smarter way to qualify is during this phase.

Let your message weed out the bad fits and build value with the good fits.

If the value grows high enough in the eyes of the prospect, money becomes much less of an issue.

If you convince them that you can solve the problem no one else could solve, it’s far more valuable to them than any run of the mill workout could ever be.

But you’ve got to do the work.

Not only do you need to follow up until that person is ready…and understand that people are ready for things on their own timeline…

…but you need to be authentic.

No bland follow up.

You can’t maintain someone’s attention by being bland.

You need to say things that really speak to the people you want…and if it drives away the rest, oh well.

Throughout the process, you’re not only trying to share valuable education, but also sharing your approach and philosophy so that someone can decide if you’re a fit for them or not.

Then, you make offers.

Varied types of offers...week after week, so that when someone is ready, they can act right then and there.

If you’re following up consistently and making offers frequently, those who want your help will engage with you when they’re ready.

Remember, people are people and they need to know why you’re better and different…or else they have no reason to choose you unless you’re a block from their house or you’re cheaper than the alternatives.

But to be a destination, you need to be special.

And people are going to decide when they’re ready…so you need to keep offers in front of them.

Think about referrals…your clients who love you forget to refer to you…can you expect someone who doesn’t know you much at all to keep you top of mind?

But if you commit to follow up, you’ll have more than enough business because your competition won’t.
Step Five: Solution-Based Selling.
Once you have a prospect that has engaged and potentially wants to work with you, you need to employ a solution-based approach to sales.

Selling access to equipment or workouts has become a commodity.

If you don’t want to compete on price, becoming the best solution for that prospect is key.

You need to make it clear how you can solve the problems your prospect is facing and how you can help them go from where they are to where they want to be.

With the right sales approach, you can sell at higher prices and enjoy increased profits, while also onboarding better clients who are a fit for you and your business.

A simple, personal conversation where you talk about the results each prospect wants to achieve, what has to happen to get there and how you can help...if done right...can grow a businesses revenue by 20-50%.
